Last week we launched the Guelph Arts Apprenticeship Program. You can read about it here and here.

It's the holiday season and in my house, no surprise, books are a frequent gift. I love the idea of a Christmas tradition where people exchange books on Christmas Eve. In Iceland, it's called "Jolabokaflod" or "Yule book flood." I read a lot of philosophy and academic writing about universities and governance. Fiction feels like a treat.

As we enter the third full week of classes, I think I'm ready to pause, catch my breath, and wish you a warm "Welcome back!" It's been a very busy start of term. Each September I sort of wonder whether September just feels busy in comparison with August's leisurely pace. But no, it's just that busy. I'm just now catching my breath and getting back to my blog. Thanks for stopping by.
One question I often get asked as Dean is whether I still teach. I started my term as Dean of the College in January 2018. There was no question of teaching that first term. No one even asked about it.

It's part of the ethos of the place. Yes, it helps that our President, Franco Vaccarino, champions sustainability and wellness. But in my experience at Guelph, an experience that spans union, professional, executive, and faculty employees, I've never been asked as often what my vacation plans are or how long I'll be away. Members of the senior administration team share holiday photos and talk about how good it was to get away and relax. Everyone puts email vacation messages on when they're on vacation and no one expects a reply if you're the one away. It's refreshing.
